How Volunteering Tasmania Works with Young People
At Volunteering Tasmania, we want every child and young person to feel safe, respected, included and heard.
We support young people to take part in ways that work for them. This means giving clear information, listening carefully, and showing how their ideas have shaped our work.
- Young people have a real say in decisions that affect them.
- Young people can share their ideas in different ways, including meetings, small groups, one-on-one conversations, writing, creative activities or other ways that suit them.
- We use plain English and give young people time and support to take part.
- We tell young people what we heard, what changed because of their feedback, and why some things may not be possible.
- We build safe and respectful relationships with young people, families, volunteers and partners.
- We work to remove barriers, respect different needs and backgrounds, and create safe spaces where young people can participate, feel included and thrive.
Who we work with
Volunteering Tasmania works with volunteer-involving organisations, councils, peak bodies, government, businesses, individuals and other partners to support volunteering across Tasmania.
When our work involves children and young people, or decisions that affect them, we expect our partners to support child and youth safety. This includes working towards the Child and Youth Safe Organisations Framework and having policies and practices that help keep children and young people safe.
Statement of Commitment to Child and Youth Safety
Our Statement of Commitment to Child and Youth Safety is our promise to help keep children and young people safe. It explains how we support safe, inclusive and empowering community participation across Lutruwita/Tasmania.
Child and Youth Safety Code of Conduct
Our Child and Youth Safety Code of Conduct explains how people representing Volunteering Tasmania must behave when working with children and young people. It helps us act with integrity, foster inclusion and build safe, purposeful connections.
Reporting a concern, complaint or compliment
If you are worried about a child or young person involved in volunteering, or if something does not feel right, we want to know.
We take concerns, complaints and feedback seriously. We will respond in line with our policies, procedures and legal responsibilities. Where needed, we will report concerns to Tasmania Police, the Office of the Independent Regulator or other relevant authorities.
