Starting Point Neighbourhood House and Rio Tinto Bell Bay Aluminium
– 45 volunteer hours
– $2,139 value to the community
A team of eight Rio Tinto Bell Bay Aluminium employees spent volunteering at Starting Point Neighbourhood House (SPNH), a community hub that supports people across Ravenswood and Launceston’s northern suburbs. As part of Volunteering Tasmania’s Corporate Volunteering Program, the Rio Tinto team worked alongside SPNH staff to prepare food, organise resources, and support upcoming community events. Volunteers were welcomed by the CEO and program coordinators, who shared insights into SPNH’s role in strengthening resilience, building skills, and creating a welcoming environment for all.
“Knowing that what I’m doing will benefit the people who need it. Connecting and meeting colleagues. Hearing stories from volunteers and people that use the service” (volunteer)
The day’s efforts made a meaningful difference for SPNH, the community, and the Rio Tinto volunteers. Together, the team prepared 63 “Freezer Filler” meals and 82 salad rolls, providing immediate food relief during the busy Christmas period while reducing waste. They also created 130 lolly bags with handwritten messages, wrapped gifts for lucky‑door prizes, decorated the Christmas tree, and organised children’s craft supplies. Practical contributions that supported both festive events and school holiday programs. Staff described the volunteers’ energy and humour as uplifting, with laughter “echoing throughout the House.” For the volunteers, the experience deepened their understanding of SPNH’s impact; the CEO’s leadership presentation and conversations over shared morning tea and lunch highlighted how the organisation creates pathways to employment and transforms lives. The day strengthened community connections, boosted SPNH’s capacity, and left volunteers with a strong sense of purpose and appreciation for what can be achieved together.
“Thanks to the Rio Tinto volunteers, our freezer is now well stocked, helping us respond quickly and compassionately, especially as we head into the busy Christmas period”. (Starting Point Neighbourhood House volunteer coordinator)
