Rio Tinto Bell Bay Aluminium Donation Sorting – September 2024

City Mission and Rio Tinto Bell Bay Aluminium

65 volunteer hours
– $3,090 value to the community

The activity involved a full day of donation‑sorting at City Mission’s Youngtown Warehouse, carried out by 13 volunteers from the Rio Tinto Bell Bay Aluminium.

“It was a fantastic opportunity to get out and help my community” (volunteer)

The donation‑sorting efforts made a clear and positive difference for City Mission staff. At the Youngtown Warehouse, staff shared how vital the support was, with the facility processing 600 tonnes of textiles annually, and supervisors praised the team’s energy, noting the volunteers brought “laughter and fun” to the space and were “a hoot” to work with, all while making a significant dent in the sorting workload by clearing multiple large bins. Their contribution supported City Mission’s ability to resell, recycle, and distribute textiles responsibly, reducing landfill and helping people in need. For the volunteers, the experience was both eye‑opening and rewarding; hearing stories from City Mission leaders about the importance of volunteering, touring Morton’s Place crisis shelter, and visiting the Mission Health facility deepened their understanding of the organisation’s impact. Many reflected on how meaningful it was to “really see the difference their volunteering had made” in just one day.

“Corporate volunteering provides many benefits to our organisation: Extra hands & raises the profile of our business in how we help in the community and how they can assist personally and professionally” (City Mission)
