Volunteer profile: Bernie the Blue-Tongued Lizard

Even lizards can be community-minded. Bernie the Blue-Tongued Lizard, who likes eating crickets and sunning himself on rocks, dropped in to the VT Burnie office recently to tell us about his volunteering work with Coastal Family Day Care’s Communities for Children program on the North West Coast. We don’t know how he got his drivers licence, but you can find Bernie and his van at family days, sporting events and events like Kids in the Park.

There is a local organisation called Cooperative Communities for Cambodia (CCC). This organisation, with the support of Ausaid and other international organisations, has established a voluntary certification process for NGO’s around good Governance and Professional Practice (GPP Certification).

Fran Healy is Chair of the Volunteering Tasmania Board. She is currently volunteering in Cambodia through Australian Business Volunteers (ABV). She and her husband Jamie Bayly-Stark are volunteering with a local NGO called Peace and Development Aid Organization (PDAO). “A couple of weeks ago we had a special experience made all the more interesting for me as a member of the Volunteering Tasmania Board. To be a part of an Australian volunteering event all the way over here in Cambodia was really special…”

Fran Healy is Chair of the Volunteering Tasmania Board. She is currently volunteering in Cambodia through Australian Business Volunteers (ABV). She and her husband Jamie Bayly-Stark are volunteering with a local NGO called Peace and Development Aid Organization (PDAO). They are based in Takeo, a large country town about 80 kilometres south of the Cambodia’s capital Phnom Penh. The three-month assignment is to build capacity in project development in the area of climate change adaption. Fran will send us regular updates on the work they are involved in, as well as life in rural Cambodia.
